A further emphasis on outpatient training and care in the Family Health Centers occurs in the third year, as each third-year resident sees patients four to five sessions per week. Third-year residents also lead the inpatient teams that provide hospital care for the most challenging rotations. With three additional months of elective time, the third-year resident is able to pursue special interests and begin final preparation for medical practice. A longitudinal Private Practice Initiative (PPI) for each resident provides weekly outpatient experience to further prepare them for life as attending physicians.
