Geriatric Medicine Core Curriculum Series

The Geriatric Medicine Core Curriculum Series (GMCC) is a lecture series that takes place once a week. The purpose of GMCC is to create a consistent, interprofessional learning series for geriatric fellows, pharmacy residents, faculty development fellows, family medicine residents, and other learners at UPMC St. Margaret. There are 5 types of lectures that are given:

  1. Journal Club
    • Each learner will present one recent journal article, published within the last 12 months. The 60-minute time slot allows for adequate background and context to be included on the topic of the article to be presented.  A review of the article should be detailed and aligned with adult learning principles. Active engagement of the audience may occur throughout and at the end of the article presentation. Presenters should be prepared to ask probing questions to create meaningful discussions among the group. Geriatric fellows present 1 journal club article per year.
  2. QI Project
  3. Geriatric Syndrome
    • Each learner will present a geriatric syndrome lecture discussion.  The topic is selected by the learner and should be an area where the learner wishes to either gain additional knowledge.  A literature review of current evidence and guidelines should be conducted in preparation. Background, current evidence, guidelines, and treatment both longstanding and newly approved should be included.  The learner should demonstrate skill as a content expert in this area of practice following the lecture discussion. Geriatric fellows present 1 geriatric syndrome lecture per year.
  4. Patient Safety
    • Similar to “morbidity and mortality rounds”, the learner should present a patient case that identifies a patient safety concern.  A detailed presentation of the case should occur along with a discussion of the root case analysis. The learner should wrap in current evidence and treatment guidelines as appropriate. Geriatric fellows present 2 patient safety lectures per year.
  5. Faculty Topic
    • Faculty will present lecture discussions on a variety of geriatric topics. Oftentimes, speakers outside of St. Margaret will come and give a lecture.
