Since the early 1990s, our residency has been providing medical coverage for the summer programs of YMCA Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer in Fombell, Pennsylvania, less than an hour's drive from Pittsburgh. Kon-O-Kwee offers traditional overnight camping experiences for children and adolescents, while Spencer hosts an overnight camp for adults with special needs. We send 2 residents per week for 6 weeks to serve as camp physicians and treat bumps, bruises, poison ivy, and homesickness, and to monitor the chronic medical conditions of campers and staff. Residency faculty visit weekly and are available by text and phone for consultation 24/7. Residents have loved delivering medical care dressed in shorts and t-shirts while enjoying the many activities camp has to offer.
