Ted Schaffer, MD

Ted C. Schaffer MD received his Doctor of Medicine and was elected to AOA at the Medical College of Virginia (now Virginia Commonwealth University).  After completing his family medicine residency at St. Margaret Memorial Hospital, he remained on as a faculty, serving as the Medical Director of the Lawrenceville Family Health Center and then as Associate Program Director for five years prior to his appointment as the Program Director.  In April 2020, Dr. Schaffer stepped aside after 22 years as the Program Director to assume the new position of Chairman of Medical Education for UPMC St. Margaret Hospital. 

During residency, Dr. Schaffer was the recipient of the prestigious Mead-Johnson Award for education in family practice. He also served as the medical director of several managed care organizations.  Sports Medicine and Orthopedics are areas of special interest and have numerous publications. 

Dr. Schaffer is married with four adult children.  He enjoys gardening, raising apples in his 20-tree orchard, and hunting for antique country furniture.  In the past few years, he has greatly enjoyed the new experience of being a grandfather.
