Donald B. Middleton, MD

Donald B. Middleton, MD is an AOA graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He completed residencies in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina and is board certified in both specialties. He joined the faculty at UPMC St. Margaret in 1978. During his 42 years of teaching in Pittsburgh, Dr. Middleton served as the residency director at UPMC St. Margaret and for 3 1/2 years as the acting chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He has twice been the keynote speaker at the graduation ceremonies for the University of Pittsburgh medical school class. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM). In 2018 Dr. Middleton received the Duncan Clark Award from the Association of Prevention Teaching and Research for his career devoted to teaching about prevention.

He is actively involved with numerous educational efforts of the AAFP and the American Board of Family Practice and is a perennial speaker at numerous regional, national, and international educational programs. His major areas of clinical interest include immunizations, well-child care, arthritis, infectious diseases, and neurologic problems including seizures and attention deficit disorder. In addition to being the author of numerous textbook chapters and scientific articles, Dr. Middleton is the editor of the DVD textbook, Comprehensive Review of Family Medicine, which features over 60 hours of lectures devoted to primary care in its current third edition. He is also the lead developer of the free immunization app for iPhones and androids, Shots by AAFP/STFM, incorporated into the AAFP app or free-standing from the app store. He continues to do immunization research with the CDC. Perhaps he is best known for his "outstanding" (guffaw!) sense of humor. Dr. Middleton and his wife of 51 years, Nancy, have three children and 8 grandchildren. He regularly exercises, reads historical works, and attends the wonderful Pittsburgh symphony.
