Family Medicine Travels to Honduras

The Global Health curriculum at UPMC St. Margaret aims to advance global health through teaching, scholarship, and expanded clinic skills via our area of concentration, INMED certificate program, international elective opportunities, and much more!

We want to highlight our international electives! Earlier this month, three of our residents, Drs. Chiat (PGY-2), Tucci-Herron (PGY-3), & Zheng (PGY-3) traveled to San Jose, Honduras in partnership with Shoulder to Shoulder. This trip is offered twice a year. Here’s what they had to say:

“We did a mix of acute and chronic care visits, women’s health visits including prenatal care, well child visits, and home visits. The star of the show was the clinic’s founder, Dr. Tania Castillo. We were there to support her with medical equipment, medications, and hands! Since establishing her clinic, Dr. Castillo has worked hard to expand it from a small urgent care to an interdisciplinary health center that now integrates physical therapy, mental health counseling, art/reading sessions with kiddos and environmental stewardship!”

As you can see, in addition to gaining clinical skills and insight into a sustainable global health model, our residents also had a lot of fun!
