Dr. Matt Schaffer graduated from medical school at the University of Virginia, where he was elected to the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He then completed his residency in Family Medicine at UPMC St. Margaret and served as Chief Resident during his final year. In 2013, Dr. Schaffer received the peer-selected "Best Teacher Award." He subsequently completed fellowship training in Primary Care Sports Medicine at UPMC St. Margaret. Dr. Schaffer is board certified in Family Medicine with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine.

Since joining the faculty at UPMC St. Margaret, Dr. Schaffer has contributed to new rotational experiences as the Director of Curriculum Development. Dr. Schaffer maintains an active practice in both Family Medicine and Sports Medicine, and he serves as the team and school district physician for Fox Chapel Area School District. Since 2018, Dr. Schaffer has served on the American Board of Family Medicine Certification Examination Review Committee, and he is an active Item Writer for the ABFM Certification and In-Training Examinations.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Schaffer enjoys running, music, food, traveling, and, most of all, spending time with his family, including his wife Julia (who is also a physician) and their two young children.
