Dr. Balestrino is a Pittsburgh native who received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He is a graduate of Temple Medical School and the UPMC St. Margaret Family Medicine Program, where he served as Chief Resident. He has been active in Family Medicine & Geriatric Education since 1994, after 12 years of private practice. He is the current Senior Medical Director for Presbyterian Senior Care and Director of Geriatric Services at UPMC St. Margaret. He is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Geriatrics.
Dr. Balestrino is married to his spouse, Diane. She was a residency classmate, also boarded in Family Medicine and Geriatrics. They have 4 children, and one grandchild. Their daughter, Maria, is a recent graduate of the UPMC St. Margaret Residency Program. His current professional interests include Palliative Medicine, Global Health, & Geriatrics. He was the physician champion and first director of the palliative care program at St. Margaret. He also serves on the Board of Shoulder to Shoulder Pgh, a NGO supporting healthcare in Honduras. He has been the recipient of Pittsburgh Magazine’s Best Doctor Award for the past 5 years. His personal interests include family, travel, gardening, and eating.
