The UPMC St. Margaret Geriatric Fellowship is a 12-month ACGME approved clinically-based geriatric training program. The program is designed to provide family medicine and internal medicine residency graduates with the unique clinical skills, knowledge and experiences necessary for delivering high quality care to the growing geriatric population. Our program offers opportunities to care for geriatric patients across multiple settings including the acute care hospital, sub-acute care and long-term care settings. UPMC St. Margaret geriatric fellows have the opportunity to work closely with our geriatric faculty in addition to providers from multiple departments including family medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry, physiatry, palliative and supportive medicine, pharmacy, speech therapy, physical therapy, and wound care.

While primarily clinical in nature, the UPMC St. Margaret Geriatric Fellowship affords many opportunities for scholarly activity, formal presentations, writing and participation in research and quality improvement projects. Further, our geriatric fellows are involved in teaching primary care residents and medical students rotating within the UPMC St. Margaret community. Candidates with a particular interest may consider an optional faculty development track which has been recently developed as a collaborative effort with the University of Pittsburgh UPMC St. Margaret Faculty Development Fellowship, one of the leading faculty development programs in the country. Participation in this optional track leads to candidacy for a faculty development certificate of completion.

UPMC St. Margaret Geriatric fellows are well-prepared, upon completion of the program, to provide quality, evidence-based care to geriatric patients across care settings. Fellows are eligible to receive a Certificate of Added Qualification in Geriatric Medicine after successfully passing the national board examination. Graduates of our program have done well both on national board exams and in their careers. Prior fellows have successfully integrated skills obtained during the fellowship into careers as full or part-time geriatricians, primary care physicians with geriatric emphasis, nursing home providers, wound care specialists, geriatric faculty members and hospitalists.
