"This is a strong and progressive residency. Accessible faculty, a wide variety of clinical experiences, resident camaraderie, excellent conferences — all a friendly, supportive environment."

    Paul Delaney, M.D.

    P. Delaney

UPMC St. Margaret holds a leadership role in Family Medicine as one of the oldest and largest Family Medicine Residency Programs in Pennsylvania.
A number of our past graduates are now "on staff" adding to the overall collegial and supportive atmosphere.

The residency program has earned national recognition for the quality of its training and the caliber of its resident staff.
Each year national organizations such as the American Board of Family Practice, American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine ask our faculty to contribute to various academic projects. Many of our fellows and residents serve on the American Academy of Family Practice committees and give numerous presentations throughout their training.

Resident At UPMC St. Margaret, the family physician is recognized as being at the very center of a community’s health care.
The Family Practice Department of the medical staff is the largest in Western Pennsylvania. Family physicians are responsible for over 50 percent of the hospital’s admissions.

Family Medicine is the hospital’s only residency.
This situation eliminates competition for patients. The medical staff, administration, and patients highly value the medical care provided by the resident staff. Residents are provided increasing levels of responsibility to match their experience and ability.

bullet point  Our Approach to Health Care

An integrated approach to comprehensive health care permeates the residency program.
Faculty and Resident Behavioral science teaching is part of everyday life at UPMC St. Margaret, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Medical and behavioral science faculty co-lead inpatient rounds and team precepting takes place at the Family Health Centers. Ongoing training is provided in pharmacology, radiology, and office management. Special programs in community medicine, school health, geriatrics, palliative care, integrative medicine, and sports medicine provide our residents with the broad education necessary for the family doctor of the 21st century.

At UPMC St. Margaret we are committed to preparing each of our residents for the broad challenges of family medicine, today and tomorrow. We were the first Family Medicine Residency Program in Pittsburgh to see HMO patients. We also provide weekly evidence-based Journal Clubs, as well as Medical Informatics, computer skills training, and a special practice management curriculum. Each of our incoming residents receives a Palm Pilot computer to enhance the availability of medical information at the "point of care".

bullet point  Our Friendly, Supportive Atmosphere

UPMC St. Margaret is an incredibly supportive place to work and learn.
Activities such as resident weekend retreats, the annual resident Holiday Party, the infamous first year skit, and the annual golf outing with medical staff all promote the needed balance between work and play. A dual advisor/mentor system provides residents with ongoing feedback and support to assist each resident in attaining his or her personal goals.
